,
Yesterday a small remark made by a co resident that "my hand writing is good" ...took me back to 1964 when I was asked by my Remington boss to note down something on a piece of paper for a visitor which I promptly complied. He was one Mr.Jhunjunwala, the then Chairman of HMT.
I was surprised to receive a telephone call from one Mr. Desai of a Company by the name Monotech Pvt.Ltd who had their offices in M block, opp super Bazar, in Connaught place.
Mr.Desai told me that one of their Directors gave my reference and asked me to visit him which I did the same evening.
Mr.Desai asked me whether I will be interested to script write his Companies Share Certificates on payment basis. I told him "yes" and he gave me a sample certificate and the details like holders name(s) and number of shares and their serial numbers. When I completed the task he was impressed and told me that he will pay me 0.50p per script. He showed me a very thick bunch of typed list giving names and details, and said they are nearly 3000 shares to be written within a stipulated time. I accepted the offer at a bargained fee of 0.75p. I also asked him to get me a bottle of Indian ink and two different types of steelpens.
For the next one month, every evening I will go to Desais office and write for 2 hours. Saturdays and Sundays were fully utilised. He used to visit the office and offer me tea and biscuits.
When I completed the work much before time, he was so happy, he gifted me 10 shares of RS.10 face value and also settled my account cheerfully.
It was then Desai told me that Mr.Jhunjunwala is one of their senior promoter directors.
The money came handy for my trip to Kerala to bring Baby and the new born Murthy back to Delhi.
You see, no job is small, no deed is insignificant or worthless. You never know when a smile you give to some unknown person comes back to you as a gift of laughter !
